Vasco went to HKU yesterday and met two silly girls...Vasco was invited to have some Caramel Macchiato...yummy!
And then he met two silly girls, Nora and Sharon...
Vasco read a lot of late 1920s and 1930s gossip magazines on Cantonese opera stars yesterday, but he was disappointed that he didn't dig up any more new gossip.
Vasco did confirm that the great Cantonese opera couples, Sit Kok Sin and Rose Tong, were great dance lovers as well. It was reported in the China Star in 1927 that the couples were the regulars of a hotel ballroom in Hong Kong. It was interesting that the newspaper said the ballroom was a great place that both foreigners and Chinese danced in the same space.
Vasco was also shocked that in Hong Kong Observer (1928), the writer actually 'advised' all those foreigner employers not to let their amahs (Chinese domestic helpers) have any holidays. If they came back late at night from a party (the example was coming back at 3 in the morning!), woke the amah up to help with undressing! Did they wear amour in those days?
